On Friday, the demolition of the Hotel Teix in Magaluf and Hostel Colón in Peguera began. Deemed obsolete, they were bought by Calvia Town Hall as part of the revitalisation of the municipality's resorts and in order to convert them into public spaces.
The Colón will become a car park with fourteen spaces. One of the spaces will be for disabled drivers; two of the others will have charging points. The Teix is to be used for new facilities and public services for residents.
Expenditure of almost six million euros for the purchase and demolition - 4.3 million for the Teix, 1.6 million for the Colón - was made possible by EU Next Generation Funds and is part of the €43 million infrastructure modernisation and improvement plan up to 2027. Among other projects covered by this investment is the redevelopment of Magaluf's promenade (Paseo Gabriel Escarrer Juliá).
President Prohens and Calvia mayor, Juan Antonio Amengual, attended the start of the demolition work. Both said the demolition was an "historic event". The president observed: "This is a day that will surely be remembered for many years, for an undeniable transformation of Peguera and Magaluf, Calvia, and the entire Balearic Islands."
It represents leaving behind something that "no longer adds value as a destination" and making use of the space "for other uses for residents". Prohens considered it to be an example of the transformation of the Balearics, "of the commitment to containment, to growth in value rather than volume, and to the well-being of residents".
Mayor Amengual said the demolitions were not an end but were the beginning of a more pleasant, liveable, and sustainable future for Calvia, "for tourists and, above all, for residents, because they will lead to a process of urban renewal, reclaiming land for public use".
