The Council of Mallorca has announced, as part of the activities for European Sustainable Mobility Week, the reinstatement of the road safety commission for cyclists, which will meet again next Thursday after a five-year hiatus. The council explained this in a statement announcing the activities between Monday and Sunday, which aim to promote sustainable mobility among the general public, raise awareness of alternatives to conventional transport, and improve safety and coexistence among different road users.
The cyclists’ road safety commission is a forum where the council meets with the Islands’ Cycling Federation, users and other associations and institutions related to cycling to listen to and discuss the problems and improvements that have been made with regard to this means of transport. The aim is to talk directly with users to improve road safety and coexistence between cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles in order to promote policies and actions that encourage sustainable and safe mobility.
Some of the topics to be discussed at the meeting are civic road projects, road surface reinforcement and asphalt renewal on the roads of the Council of Mallorca. Proposals such as cleaning road verges, making road verges wider in new projects and installing specific road signs for cyclists will also be put on the table.
‘We are pleased to have reinstated this meeting because it was requested by the associations and the Federation, and it is a perfect way to hear first-hand about the needs of the people of Mallorca,’ said the Minister for Territory, Fernando Rubio, and the Island Director of Mobility and Activities, Rafel Oliver.
This meeting will be attended by the council’s Department of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, the Island Emergency Management Department, the Island Sports Management Department, the Islands Cycling Federation, the DGT, the Guardia Civil, the Balearic Islands Public Safety Institute (ISPIB), the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (FELIB), Mallorca Hotel Federation (FEHM), Balearic Islands Triathlon Federation, PLEASE Platform, Balearic Transport Federation (FEBT) and Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB).
