The alert comes into force at 2am on Tuesday (in the east) and 8am in the Tramuntana and north/northeast.

A low-pressure system has triggered a yellow weather alert for parts of Mallorca on Tuesday, 23 September, amid forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms. The alert affects Levante, the Serra de Tramuntana, and the north and north-east of the island.

María José Guerrero, delegate and spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Balearic Islands, warned that up to 30 litres of rain per square metre could fall in just one hour, highlighting the potential for localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions.

The alert is in force from 2am Tuesday in the east of Mallorca and from 8am in the Tramuntana and north/northeast and will remain active until the end of the day. Weather forecasts indicate generally cloudy skies with scattered showers, some of which could be accompanied by thunderstorms. These are expected to be more frequent and intense in the northern half of the island, although occasional showers cannot be ruled out elsewhere.

Daytime temperatures will remain largely unchanged or may fall slightly, with maximum temperatures ranging from 23°C to 25°C, below the usual 26°C for this time of year. Night-time temperatures will also dip slightly, ranging from 13°C to 18°C, compared with the average 16.5°C. Winds will be light to moderate, blowing from the north and north-east.

Wednesday: Occasional rain and gradual warming

On Wednesday, 24 September, cloudy intervals are expected, with the chance of occasional rainfall, particularly in the morning. Guerrero explained that although the low-pressure system will begin to move towards France, its effects will continue to be felt, especially in the north of Mallorca.

Daytime temperatures will see little change or a slight rise, with maximums between 22°C and 26°C. Winds will remain light, predominantly from the north-east.

Thursday: Continued instability

The unsettled weather is set to continue on Thursday, 25 September, with periods of cloud and occasional showers still possible. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly, with maximum readings between 23°C and 27°C, while winds will remain light, blowing from the east and north-east.

Autumn officially begins this Monday at 7pm in Mallorca. The season is set to arrive accompanied by the likelihood of rain and lower-than-normal temperatures, signalling a clear shift from the warmth of late summer.
