The Guardia Civil has found 32 dogs dead from starvation on a farm in Badajoz on the mainland. They had been abandoned since last June without water or food. Some of them showed signs of having tried to feed on the decomposing corpses of the already deceased animals.

The Guardia Civil are investigating the owner of the property for animal abandonment for failing to provide basic care, resulting in the death of all the dogs, some of which were loose and others tied up with chains or inside kennels. All were in deplorable health conditions, without water or food, which led to their death by starvation.

The incident took place last week when a patrol from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) found evidence that there might be dogs in poor condition and neglected by their owner in a warehouse, so steps were taken to locate the person responsible and the owner of the property.

Once the inspection had been carried out in the presence of the owner, a neighbour from the same municipality, the officers found 32 dog carcasses scattered around the premises, which were extremely thin and showed signs of neglect and were in various states of decomposition.

The proceedings in the case have been referred to the Investigating Court of Llerena and the Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Badajoz.
