The Associació Veïns Passeig Maritim Palma resident association has made another plea for help.
It stated today that Palma’s seafront promenade, one of the city’s most emblematic spaces and a privileged showcase for visitors, is going through a situation that is worrying all sectors linked to its environment. Residents, hoteliers, shopkeepers and tourists share a growing unease about the image of institutional neglect projected by this enclave, which is affected by accumulated dirt, incidents of insecurity and increasingly evident urban disorder.
Those who live in the area complain about the lack of cleanliness and maintenance, which results in neglected streets, damaged street furniture and accumulated waste that damages the quality of life and daily coexistence. Added to this reality is the fact that many kebab shops, bars, minimarkets and nightclubs in the area do not comply with basic rules of coexistence or hygiene. These establishments maintain a total lack of health control and do not warn their customers about anti-social behaviour, which exacerbates the problem of dirt, noise and disorder.
This situation is doubly serious as it directly affects an infrastructure in which the city has invested more than 40 million euros to turn the Paseo Marítimo into a model of quality services and international prestige.
Even tourists, who come to the Paseo Marítimo in search of leisure, relaxation and Mediterranean culture, are surprised by the contrast between the natural beauty of the enclave and the state of neglect of some of its public spaces, voicing criticism that is already having an impact on international forums and reviews.
All groups are calling for urgent action, especially from the council, to restore the dignity and appeal of a place that should be a symbol of the city. Cleanliness, safety, compliance with regulations and order are basic requirements that cannot be put off any longer.
