Culture is important but the sun is vital

Mallorca is known Europe wide for the sun and its beaches. It is a winning formula which has transformed the island into a multi-billion euro industry. It is a six to eight month season because let’s face it the winters are cold and during the low season resorts close down.

The leading local authorities are now trying to promote Mallorca as a cultural destination which is great during the winter.

To be honest I have never seen a tourist in Punta Ballena in Magalluf asking for directions to the Palau Solleric cultural centre in Palma and I haven’t seen many tourists wandering around resorts after October.

The secret of Mallorca’s success is that it has everything under the sun. Can it be an all-year-round destination? Yes, but plenty of work is needed. Museums and cultural centres can encourage people to visit but they also need good weather and plenty more.

Mallorca may encourage more tourists in low season who will visit museums and art galleries but remember what pays the rent is the small army of people in the peak summer who want the sun and beach.
