Mallorca in the eye of the storm, high winds and heavy downpour overnight

Unsettled weather forecast all week

It had been forecast but it appears that summer came to an end on Sunday night as the island was hit by a major storm. Mallorca remains this morning on alert for high winds and rain. Heavy rains are normal on the island at this time of the year, infact locally they are known as the Gota Fria, or Cold Drop.

According to the Palma Met Office relatively large amounts of rain fell overnight in various parts of the island. An estimated 26 litres of rain per square metre fell in Sta María, 17 Campos, 15 Binissalem, 14 Palma, 13 Banyalbufar, 10 Sineu, 10 Son Bonet, 9 Cap Blanc 7 Son Servera, 7 Portocolom, 6 Campos.

High winds also battered the island overnight.Winds of 65kmh of were registered in Son Bonet, 56 at Palma airport, 53 in central Palma Calvià 52, Palma University 51.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue throughout the week with more heavy rains and high winds.

The Palma Met Office also announced this morning that this summer has been the third hottest on record (recorded temperatures started in 1962).
